How we work

A coach, not another video course

There are more free chess lessons online than anyone could watch in a lifetime. Watching them feels productive, and your rating stays exactly where it was.

Kivantaa works the other way round. We start from your games, find what's actually costing you points, and give you a small amount of work aimed directly at it. Usually it's the same two mistakes, over and over.

Frequently asked

The questions we get most

What rating do I need?

None. We coach complete beginners through to around 2000. The free first lesson tells us where to start.

Do you teach children?

Yes, from about age 7. A parent or guardian books the sessions, receives all communication and can sit in on any lesson.

Which platform do you use?

Video for the lesson and a free online board you already use, like Lichess or Chess.com. Nothing to buy.

Will my rating go up?

Most students who do the weekly work improve, but we don't promise a number. Anyone guaranteeing a rating gain is selling you something.

How many games should I play?

Two long games a week is the sweet spot. Blitz is fine for fun, but it isn't where improvement comes from.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. No contract, no minimum term. Access stays open until the end of the month you already paid for.
